Linda interrupted.
“He was venting.”
I turned toward her.
“For twenty-two months?”
Her mouth closed.
Nathan tried again.
“I love you.”
Several guests murmured.
He reached for my hand.
I moved away.
“Then why is your name Nicholas Bennett?”
Everything stopped.
Nathan went white.
Not pale.
White.
Linda’s handbag slipped from her hand.
Rebecca glanced toward the doors.
Nathan stared at me.
“What did you say?”
“Who is Nicholas Bennett?”
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
I looked toward Linda.
“Maybe your mother can explain.”
A tiny tremor moved through her chin.
Then I said:
“Or should I call her your wife?”
Chaos exploded.
Guests stood.
My mother screamed, “What?”
Nathan lunged toward me.
Not violently.
But fast enough that Ben immediately stepped between us.
“Don’t.”
Nathan stopped.
My son was nearly his height.
For the first time, Nathan looked at him with open hatred.
“Move.”
Ben did not.
