I looked at Linda.
“You’re trusting them with your past.”
Linda’s smile faded.
Nathan squeezed my hand.
Too tightly.
“Sharon,” he whispered.
I pulled free.
“You trust them with the people you love. The things you fear. The things you survived.”
I faced the guests.
“Yesterday, Nathan called me from Linda’s house.”
Linda stopped breathing.
“He wanted to ask whether the table runners should be blush or red.”
Nathan’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
“The call accidentally remained connected after Nathan believed it had ended.”
I watched the color leave Linda’s face.
Nathan whispered, “Sharon.”
“And I heard a conversation.”
Nobody moved.
Nathan recovered quickly.
“Sweetheart, maybe we should talk privately.”
“No.”
My voice echoed through the microphone.
“No more private conversations.”
I nodded toward Elise.
The projector came alive behind us.
A black screen.
Then Nathan’s voice filled the room.
