My Fiancé Left the Phone Line Open One Day Before Our Wedding, and I Heard Him Tell His Mother He Planned to Take My House, My Savings, and Then Get Rid of Me. So I Changed a Few Details About the Ceremony—and When the Final Wedding Gift Appeared on the Screen, Nathan Learned He Had Never Been the One Running the Con.

“He knew her name.”

“What?”

“Tonight. Nathan said Melissa left everything to the girls.”

“You told him she died.”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell him she left them an estate?”

“No.”

A long silence followed.

“I never discussed the trust with him.”

Rebecca’s voice became very quiet.

“Then we have a different problem.”

At 1:17 a.m., I woke Ben.

He was sleeping in the guest room because he had come home from college for the wedding.

He opened one eye.

“Mom?”

“Get dressed.”

He sat up instantly.

“What happened?”

“Just get dressed.”

“Is someone hurt?”

“No.”

“Is it Nathan?”

Hearing his name almost made me flinch.

“Yes.”

Ben was out of bed before I could say anything else.

He had always been like that.

Even as a child, fear made him calm.

Five minutes later, he came into the kitchen wearing sweatpants and a sweatshirt.

I put the phone recording on the counter.
