My Father Hum:iliated Me at My Sister’s Wedding and Shoved Me Into the Fountain. He Had No Idea the Man Walking Through the Hotel Doors Was My Husband.

The night he drove through a snowstorm to pick me up from college because I was sick and afraid.

Love did not vanish because someone harmed you.

That was what made it difficult.

I answered carefully.

“Because I didn’t know how to let you into my life without letting you take over the room.”

He stared.

“I didn’t trust you to meet Julian without turning it into an evaluation.”

“I didn’t trust you to see me happy without asking whether I deserved it.”

His face changed.

“You think that little of me?”

“No.”

“I think you taught me what to expect.”

For once, Victor had nothing ready.

Maren stepped forward and hugged me.

It was awkward because of the enormous dress.

Still real.

“I want to talk tomorrow.”

“So do I.”

“Promise?”

“Yes.”

Julian opened the outside door.

We left.

No speech.

No dramatic reveal to four hundred guests.

No

revenge.

The most powerful part was simply realizing I did not need to stay long enough to watch Victor understand.

Julian and I went home.

Not to a mansion.

Not to some glamorous penthouse my family could envy.

A two-bedroom apartment in a quiet neighborhood.

We ordered soup from a late-night café.

I sat in bed wearing one of Julian’s shirts.

At two in the morning, I finally said:

“I’m sorry.”

He looked over.

“For calling?”

“No.”

“For hiding you.”

Julian put down his book.

“You didn’t hide me from your life.”

“I hid our marriage from them.”

“At first because you needed privacy.”

“At first.”

“And later?”

I looked around.

A crooked ceramic bowl Julian had made in a disastrous pottery class.

A photograph from our trip to Coralhaven Coast.

Two mugs on the dresser.

A blanket he stole every night and denied stealing.

“I got comfortable having two

versions of myself.”

“With you, I was just Evelyn.”

“With them, I went back to being the person who needed to defend everything.”

“That sounds exhausting.”

“It was.”

Julian took my hand.

“I don’t want you telling people about me because you suddenly feel guilty.”
