It was such a normal thing for an eight-year-old to say that I nearly cried.
Instead I kissed the top of her head.
“Thanks.”
When I reached the building, Gregory was not waiting in the lobby.
For several seconds, I wondered whether he had actually left.
Then the elevator doors opened upstairs, and I saw him standing inside my apartment.
He looked tired rather than angry.
That made him seem more familiar.
More like the man I had trusted.
“I packed your documents,” he said.
A cardboard file box sat on the kitchen table.
Beside it was the purchase agreement.
For the first time, I saw the entire document.
Christopher stayed several feet behind me.
He did not speak.
Gregory looked at him, then back at me.
“You really brought him.”
“I told you I wasn’t coming alone.”
Gregory exhaled through his nose.
“Alison, this got completely out of control.”
