Slowly, he turned toward Jim, who stood behind us flanked by two federal agents.
“You…” Julian spat, his voice trembling with sudden, explosive rage as he glared at my brother. “You idiot! You went to the authorities?!”
“He didn’t go to anyone, Julian,” I said quietly, stepping out from behind him.
Julian froze.
He slowly turned his head toward me.
I looked him directly in the eye, my voice steady, calm, and completely devoid of fear.
“Lily told me about the black box in our hotel room,” I said, every word carrying clearly through the quiet gate lobby. “She told me you asked her to keep a secret from her mother.”
Julian stared at me, his jaw dropping open and his eyes widening with absolute, unadulterated horror as realization struck him like a freight train.
“Chloe… no…” he stammered, his polished facade completely shattering into pathetic, desperate fragments. “Chloe, baby, listen to me… it’s a mistake… I did it for us! For our family! For our future!”
“My family doesn’t build its future on crime, greed, and using my brother as a sacrificial lamb,” I said, taking Lily’s hand and stepping backward, away from him.
Sarah motioned toward the two federal officers.
“Take him into custody.”
The agents stepped forward, grabbed Julian’s arms, pulled the leather briefcase from his hands, and snapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists behind his back.
“Chloe! Please!” Julian shouted, his voice cracking into a desperate, pathetic screech as passengers stopped to stare and pulled out their phones to record the scene. “Chloe! Don’t do this! Think of Lily! Think of our marriage!”
I didn’t answer.
I simply held my daughter close against my hip, shielding her eyes while the officers escorted Julian down the hallway toward the airport security holding office.
Six months later, spring sunlight streamed through the kitchen windows of my new townhouse in the Chicago suburbs.
The legal battle had been intense but swift.
Because of the overwhelming documentary evidence I had provided, along with Jim’s full cooperation as a state witness, federal prosecutors successfully dismantled Julian’s entire money-laundering network.
