My Boyfriend Knew About My Four-Year-Old Daughter for a Year 002

I almost smiled.

Daniel had inherited that stubbornness honestly.

I took Evelyn’s hand.

“I’m Claire’s sister.”

Her eyes moved to me.

For several seconds, her expression was blank.

Then recognition bloomed.

“Little Anna.”

My breath caught.

“You remember me?”

“Claire had your picture.”

Tears suddenly filled Evelyn’s eyes.

“She loved you so much.”

Something inside me cracked.

All this time, I’d been chasing a mystery.

A name.

A photograph.

But Claire had loved me.

Whatever else had happened, that mattered.

“Why did she leave?” I asked.

Evelyn squeezed my hand.

“She found out the report was wrong.”

“What report?”

“The medical report.”

Stephen leaned closer.

“What was wrong with it?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Names.”

“What names?”

“People listed sick who weren’t sick. People listed well who were.”

Stephen went very still.

I remembered his description of Claire’s job in medical benefits.

“Insurance records?” I asked.

Evelyn nodded.

“Company clinic.”
