“I didn’t realize she was your sister until years later.”
“When?”
“After we got engaged.”
My anger returned.
“And you still said nothing.”
“I promised your father.”
Of course.
Another promise.
“What did he tell you?”
“Not much.”
Daniel looked at Stephen.
“How much does he know?”
“Enough.”
“That’s not an answer.”
Stephen spoke calmly.
“I found Harlow records mentioning Claire while digitizing archives. I recognized Lily because she resembles Claire.”
Daniel’s expression sharpened.
“You saw the file?”
“Part of it.”
“When?”
“Seven years ago.”
Daniel sat back.
“That explains something.”
“What?”
“My mother received a call around then.”
I felt my patience fraying.
“What call?”
“Someone asked whether she still had any property belonging to Claire.”
Stephen frowned.
“Who?”
“They claimed to be from Harlow records management.”
“What did your mother say?”
“Nothing. She hung up.”
“Why would she have Claire’s property?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Because Claire left something with us.”
