“Because Aunt Margaret called me.”
I stared at Stephen.
“She called you?”
“She told me you found Claire’s photograph.”
Another silence.
Then Daniel said quietly:
“I’ve been hoping for fifteen years that you never would.”
-END OF Chapter 2–
Part 3 of 5
I had spent six years married to Daniel.
I knew the way he drank coffee.
I knew he couldn’t sleep with his feet covered.
I knew he pretended not to enjoy romantic comedies and then quoted them months later.
I knew how he looked when he was lying.
Or at least I’d thought I did.
“Why do you know about Claire?” I asked.
Daniel was silent.
“Answer me.”
“Not over the phone.”
“I am becoming extremely tired of people saying that.”
“Anna.”
“No. Everyone keeps deciding what I’m allowed to know. My father did it. Margaret did it. Apparently you did it.”
“I’m coming over.”
“Don’t.”
“I’m already in the car.”
