Then, two weeks after we brought Brenda home, he stopped sleeping in his own bedroom.
And that was when everything began to change.
Part 2 — Under the Crib
The first time I found him there, I almost laughed.
It was early morning, and when I walked into the nursery, I noticed a blanket sticking out from underneath Brenda’s crib.
I bent down.
There was Ben.
He had brought his pillow, his blanket, and his stuffed dinosaur with him and had somehow squeezed himself underneath the crib.
“Ben?”
He opened his eyes and blinked at me.
“What are you doing?”
“Sleeping.”
His answer was so matter-of-fact that I almost smiled.
“You have a bedroom.”
“I know.”
“And there’s an actual bed in that bedroom.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you sleeping underneath Brenda’s crib?”
He shrugged.
“I like it here.”
At the time, I thought it was adorable.
Ben had waited years for a sibling. Brenda had finally arrived, and apparently he wanted to be close enough to protect her even while he slept.
