Diane suddenly raised her voice.
“Because neither of you was being realistic!”
Daniel slammed his hand against the table.
“Realistic about what?”
“Your life!”
She pointed toward the upstairs floor.
“You already have Ben. He had seven years with both of you, and now suddenly everything is appointments and specialists and therapy—”
“Enough,” I said.
Diane stared at us.
“I’m thinking about everyone.”
“No,” I replied. “You’re making decisions for everyone.”
“I’m thinking about Brenda too.”
“By waking a sleeping baby until she cries?”
Her face crumpled.
“I needed you to understand how difficult your lives could become.”
I stared at her.
“You created the difficulty yourself.”
“Because you weren’t listening!”
Then a small voice came from the doorway.
We all turned.
Ben stood there in his dinosaur pajamas.
Diane immediately fell silent.
Ben looked straight at his grandmother.
“You keep saying everything changed.”
No one spoke.
