Thomas had quietly donated instruments over the years.
A cello.
Three trumpets.
A piano repair fund.
Scholarships for children who wanted private lessons but couldn’t afford them.
Always anonymously.
Ms. Delgado, standing nearby, suddenly spoke.
“The Mercer Fund.”
Daniel nodded.
She stared at him.
“Our music program has received money from something called the Mercer Fund for years.”
“That was him.”
Mrs. Parker looked stunned.
“Why?”
Daniel smiled.
“Because of you.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“Not the way you’re thinking.”
He opened his father’s journal.
“Dad wrote about it.”
He read:
“Eleanor taught me something without ever intending to. She stayed. I always thought leaving was the brave thing. She showed me that staying can be brave too.”
Mrs. Parker’s eyes filled.
“He didn’t donate because he was trying to win you back,” Daniel said. “He donated because this school mattered to you. Eventually it mattered to him too.”
