“But Mrs. Parker was at that concert,” Owen said.
I looked at him.
“How do you know?”
He pointed toward the final page.
Faculty acknowledgments.
Eleanor Parker’s name appeared among the teachers who had organized the evening.
Owen lowered his voice.
“Thomas didn’t just come to see her.”
“What do you mean?”
“He came here to play the song.”
I felt a chill I couldn’t explain.
Owen pulled one more page from his backpack.
“There’s something else.”
It was a handwritten note found with the archived music.
Only one line.
Eleanor never heard the ending. Don’t tell her why.
Underneath were two initials.
T.M.
Owen looked at me.
“Why would Thomas come all the way back to play a song for her…”
He tapped the note.
“…and then deliberately make sure she didn’t hear the ending?”
-END OF Chapter 2–
Mrs. Parker did not appreciate being investigated.
That was the first thing she told Owen when he showed her the photocopy.
