My 12-year-old son asked to invite our 78-year-old neighbor, who used to teach at his school, to his Halloween concert 002

“My goodness.”

The room had become so silent that I could hear the faint buzz of the stage lights.

Daniel took another step.

“He told me once that he had known a teacher here when he was young. He never told me her name.”

Mrs. Parker stared at the music.

“He wrote that song.”

“I know.”

“For me.”

Daniel nodded.

Owen looked between them.

I could tell he hadn’t known that part.

The surprise had surprised him too.

Mrs. Parker reached for the page.

Daniel placed it carefully in her hands.

“He asked me to give you something else if I ever found you.”

Mrs. Parker looked up.

Daniel reached inside his jacket.

And removed a sealed envelope.

Across the front, written in faded blue ink, were the words:

For Eleanor Parker — when the song is finally finished.

Mrs. Parker stared at it.

For a moment, she didn’t move.

Then she whispered something that changed the entire meaning of the evening.
