Leo’s Hospital Papers Changed What I Thought I Knew About Vivian

“No.”

Mike nodded.

“That matters.”

Then he left.

I held Leo closer, but I kept my eyes on the doorway.

Karen had been waiting downstairs with a folded parking receipt in her hand. I had seen her earlier, anxious and quiet, but I had not known what Vivian had told her.

Now I needed to know what she had been waiting for.

Mike found Karen near the Buick in the parking garage.

She stood beside the passenger door, the receipt folded into

a small square between her fingers.

“Karen?”

She looked up.

“Yes.”

“I need to ask what your mother told you.”

Karen looked toward the elevator.

“She said she wanted a private family discussion.”

“About the baby?”

Karen swallowed.

“She said she wanted me to be there when she talked to Elena.”

“Did she say you were supposed to take Leo?”

Karen shook her head.

“No.”

“Did she say Elena had agreed to give him to you?”
