Then Carol asked when the relationship had ended. After a long pause, Rebecca admitted it hadn’t. They were still seeing each other, and she had last seen Daniel the previous Thursday.
Daniel had told Carol he was having dinner with a client that night. She had saved him a slice of pie. He came home late, kissed her cheek, and smiled while she talked about their youngest child’s school project.
Rebecca explained that Daniel had invited her to the recovery barbecue so everyone would get used to having her around. He kept promising to leave soon, blaming Carol’s worries about the children for the delay. And yes, he had told Rebecca he loved her.
After the call, Carol sat completely still. The letter had made her think Daniel might have regretted the affair. Now she knew the kidney donation betrayal had never stopped. He hadn’t chosen his marriage. He had simply refused to choose at all.
