Nobody backstage knew any of this. Jimmy certainly didn’t. Julia had no idea. As the show moved along, everything appeared perfectly normal until Julia was answering a question and suddenly stopped in the middle of a sentence. Her famous smile disappeared. Her eyes moved past Jimmy, past the cameras, and toward the audience. She stared at one particular seat. For seven seconds, she said nothing. In television, seven seconds can feel enormous.
Jimmy immediately noticed the change and followed her gaze. Then Julia stood. She didn’t wait for a producer. She didn’t ask whether she was supposed to leave the stage.
She simply pointed toward Margaret and asked about the shirt. The cameras scrambled to capture what was happening. Jimmy abandoned his prepared questions. The audience began murmuring. Margaret looked around in disbelief, wondering why an entire television production had suddenly focused on her.
Then Julia said something that transformed an ordinary piece of faded cotton into a doorway to the past: her mother had made those shirts.
