“David, what is this? What are you trying to tell me?”
He glanced at Leo, gently brushing the damp hair away from our son’s forehead before turning back toward me. His expression was calm, but there was something unfamiliar in his eyes.
“For five years, Clara, I’ve let your family believe I was a struggling mechanic. I knew how badly you wanted your mother’s approval, and I didn’t want to make your relationship with her even more difficult.”
I shook my head, confused.
“But you are a project consultant. You’ve always told me that.”
“I do work on projects, but not in the way your mother imagines.”
He opened a slim phone bearing an insignia I’d never seen before and placed it beside the metal card. Then he told me something that made the entire room seem to tilt.
“I’m the founder and majority managing partner of Vanguard Alpha Capital. Our firm controls approximately twenty-two billion dollars in private liquidity across five continents.”
