I was sitting beside my 4-year-old son in the ICU, holding his hand, when Mom called and ordered me to attend my sister’s 18th birthday party with 50 relatives. Crying, I told her his fever had reached 104°F and the doctors said he was seriously ill. She scoffed, “It’s just a cold. Leave him with David and get over here!” After 25 years of letting my family control me, I turned to my husband. What he whispered next changed everything.

But David wasn’t finished.

“There’s also Chloe’s birthday present. The rose-colored Mercedes-AMG convertible parked outside the hotel.”

My mother went quiet.

“That vehicle was leased through one of my company’s fleet accounts. I’ve authorized its recovery because it was being used outside the permitted agreement.”

“You wouldn’t dare ruin Chloe’s birthday!”

David looked toward Leo, who lay exhausted beneath his oxygen mask.

“You told my wife to abandon our seriously ill son so she could help entertain your guests. You made it clear that a party mattered more to you than his life.”

For once, Eleanor had no immediate response.

“David, wait. We can discuss this privately.”

“You had your chance to show compassion.”

He ended the call and returned to our son’s bedside. I watched him gently take Leo’s small hand, his expression softening as he kissed our boy’s forehead.
