Halfway there she said, “Are you leaving him?”
“I don’t know.”
“Do you want to?”
“I don’t know.”
“Fair.”
She kept driving.
After another mile she said, “Do you think he meant to hurt you?”
“No.”
“Do you think he did hurt you?”
I looked out the window.
“Yes.”
Nora nodded.
“Both can be true.”
Dr. Miller met me afterward.
The mass was clearer now.
A large uterine fibroid.
Possibly several overlapping fibroids.
She recommended surgery because of the size and my symptoms.
“But you don’t think it’s cancer?”
“The imaging is reassuring.”
Reassuring.
Another medical word with carefully limited promises.
“We will examine tissue after removal. That’s standard.”
I nodded.
Then I asked the question that had been bothering me.
“Did Daniel become like this because of Rebecca?”
Dr. Miller hesitated.
“I can speak generally about what I observed, but not disclose medical details that remain protected.”
“That’s enough.”
