I took my 7-year-old son, who has Down syndrome and is battling leukemia, to see the ocean, because that was his greatest – and perhaps LAST – wish… But that evening, the hotel manager knocked on our door and said: “There is something about this trip that you do not know.”

He was just a cheerful seven-year-old boy.

That evening we returned to the hotel.

I had only just closed the door when someone knocked.

The hotel manager stood outside the door with a dark blue box in his hands.

He looked nervous.

« Ponya Parker? »

« Yes? »

He looked at Liam, and then back at me.

« There is something about this trip that you don’t know yet. »

He gave me the box.

I opened it.

And I froze.

Inside, I saw something I hadn’t seen for four years .

An object that belonged to a man who disappeared from our lives after Liam became seriously ill.

There was a handwritten letter on top.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

Liam’s father.

My hands started trembling when I read the first line:

« Sarah, your father didn’t pay for this trip. I did. »
PART 2

I stared at the sentence until the letters began to melt before my eyes.
