Ginny Hooper clicked “submit” on her early admission application to New York University, her dream since adolescence. The next day, she received a diagnosis that changed everything.
It had all started with signs anyone might have dismissed: her face was changing shape, she had more acne, and she attributed it to stress. As she explained, these were symptoms closely associated with hormones.
Doctors discovered that she had Cushing’s syndrome: her body was producing too much cortisol. In searching for the cause, they found a tumor in her abdomen: stage 4 adrenocortical carcinoma, a cancer so rare that it affects between 1 and 2 people per million each year.
The operation lasted nine hours: they removed her right adrenal gland, part of her liver, and part of her diaphragm, and found a couple of lesions in her lungs. Now 20, she continues treatment with surgeries, radiation, and a clinical trial while attending university.
