“They stopped waiting for you three years ago. And I made sure they will never feel abandoned again.”
Silence fell over the porch. Behind them, the movers continued their work quietly.
Victor finally spoke, his voice quiet: “It wasn’t supposed to turn out like this, man. Things just fell apart. I made bad financial calls… I thought I could fix it.”
Brenda turned on him with built-up resentment. “Don’t blame everything on bad luck! You swore this investment would secure our future!” she snapped. “Look where your promises got us!”
I had no reason to stay for their argument.
“There is nothing left for you here,” I said simply.
“Gavin, please wait!” Brenda pleaded as I turned toward the steps. “You can’t just leave us with nowhere to go!”
Victor stepped forward, his expression filled with panic. “Just give us a few extra days, Gavin. Don’t push us out on the street like this.”
