I returned home with a prosthetic leg, only to discover that my wife had abandoned me with our newborn twins. Three years later, fate gave me a chance to face her again—and she never saw it coming.

I sat in my truck for a quiet moment, observing how far they had fallen. Their heated argument ended as Brenda turned and walked inside, with Victor following right behind her as the heavy front door slammed shut.

I stepped out of the vehicle, adjusted my jacket, and walked up the steps.

I knocked.

Brenda opened the door a moment later and froze as if she were looking at a ghost. The color drained from her face.

Victor heard the sudden silence and turned around. He looked like a man who had been expecting a difficult reality to catch up with him eventually.

“G… Gavin?” Brenda stammered.

I looked past her to the lead mover. “How much longer will the clearance take?” I asked calmly.

He checked his digital tablet. “The legal takeover process is complete, sir. We’re just removing the remaining personal belongings as instructed.”

I turned my attention back to Brenda and Victor.
