It’s been two years since the surgery.
My eyes aren’t perfect. I still need glasses for reading. Bright lights still give me headaches. Dr. Osei says the nerve is still healing and might keep getting better for another year or two.
Nigel’s procedure has been approved for a larger trial. Forty patients across three hospitals. He works normal hours now. Mostly. When he stays late, he tells me. When a trial goes badly, he tells me.
Every morning, he puts my coffee mug exactly three inches from my right hand.
I don’t need him to anymore. I can see the mug just fine.
But I’ve never asked him to stop.
The yellowed letter is framed now. It hangs in the hallway, right next to our wedding picture. Ethan’s idea. Rose picked the frame.
Sometimes guests ask about it. A kid’s letter, misspelled, in pencil. I am going to be a docter and fix your eyes.
