“Do what?”
“Our dream,” he said. “Our dream is going to come true. You’ll be able to see.”
The words didn’t make sense at first. They just sat in the air.
“Trust me,” he said.
I sat very still at the kitchen table.
My heart was pounding so hard I thought I might faint. I put both hands flat on the table to steady myself.
“Don’t play with me,” I said quietly.
“I’d never do that.”
He came around the table. I heard his knees hit the kitchen tile. He knelt in front of my chair and took both of my hands in his.
They were ice cold.
“I’ve been developing a procedure,” he said. “For years. Decades. It reconnects damaged pathways in the optic nerve using a regenerative graft. Stem cells, scaffolding, growth factors. It’s… it’s complicated. I’ll explain all of it. It’s been through animal trials. It’s been through two phases of human trials in Switzerland. Fourteen patients. Eleven of them recovered meaningful sight.”
