“Colette?”
Taryn nodded.
Something inside my chest went completely still.
“When?”
“About four months ago.”
I looked from one daughter to the other.
“Four months?”
“We didn’t answer her right away,” Brielle said quickly. “At first we thought it might be fake.”
“How did she find you?”
“Social media. Then she emailed me through school,” Taryn explained.
I kept my voice as steady as I could.
“What did she want?”
“She said she wanted to talk.”
“And you did?”
Brielle looked down.
“Eventually.”
I pushed my chair back slightly, not because I planned to leave but because suddenly I needed more space.
“How long have you been talking to her?”
“About three months.”
“Talking how?”
“Messages. Phone calls.”
I already knew there was more.
“Have you seen her?”
Neither answered immediately.
Then Taryn nodded.
“Twice.”
I stared at her.
“You met her?”
“At the hospital.”
That stopped me.
“The hospital?”
