I married a man in prison for money. Three years later his conviction was overturned — and eight days after he came home he put a black box on the kitchen table and said, “Now it’s my turn.”

then the very next question out of me is how he knew that page existed.

And the one after that is whose four names are printed on it.

And the one after that is where two thousand dollars a month has actually been coming from since the March of 2022.

And then there is the last one, which is the only question that man actually cared about.

Whether the woman who had been standing outside courthouses on Carrow Street in the rain for a year was doing it because of him.

Or because of what she had just found out she owed him.

He would not risk it. Not for eleven months. Not for the whole twelve years.

That man did eleven more months in Fennimore rather than find out that the only person on earth still fighting for him was doing it out of a debt she had just discovered she owed.
