“The envelope,” Ruth said, “contains what Eleanor found out later.

After Gerald died and his estate was settled.” She pushed it toward me.
“Open it.”
Inside was a single document.
A legal summary, dated fourteen years ago, prepared by a firm I didn’t recognize.
I read the first paragraph and looked up.
“This says Gerald’s family set up a trust,” I said.
“Yes.”
“In my name.”
Ruth nodded slowly.
“Eleanor found out about it six years after you were born.
Gerald’s mother had a crisis of conscience — late in life, too late to matter much, but she did it.
She established a trust for the child.
Named only by birth date and case number.” Ruth’s hands tightened slightly on the table.
