Near the end of the letter, he wrote:
You may have thought you gave me a meal. What you actually gave me was evidence that I had not become invisible.

What Ten Dollars Became
Mr. Pierce gave me several minutes before opening the folder he had brought with him.
Walter’s foundation had assisted more than eighty families over the years, and although the organization would continue under the direction of his son and granddaughter, Walter had also left a private gift for me.
When the attorney told me the amount, I thought I had misunderstood.Three hundred thousand dollars.
I stared at him, waiting for him to correct himself.
“I’m sorry,” I finally said. “How much?”
He repeated it.
My first response was not excitement.
It was disbelief.
“I gave him ten dollars.”
Mr. Pierce smiled gently.
