I dressed like a homeless man and walked into my own restaurant to see how my employees treated people who couldn’t afford a decent meal.

“If you walk in there and fire them, you’ve given them a day to wipe it.”

“When does the cousin come?”

“Tomorrow,” I said.

“Two o’clock.”

“I’ll have a w*rrant by noon,” said Detective Trevino.

“I’ll have two detectives at Tables 4 and 9.”

“Wear the jacket.”

“Keep your phone recording.”

“Alonzo.”

“Yes?”

“Whatever Hunter says to you tomorrow, whatever he calls you, you do not say who you are until I tell you.”

“Can you do that?”

That night, after close, I let myself into my own office with my own key.

I turned on the lamp, and I pulled out the file drawer, and I took out the monthly packets, all thirty-six of them, with Hunter’s yellow tabs.

I read every page.

It took until almost two in the morning.

On the packet dated March first, under a yellow tab, was a document three pages long.
