I Did 23 Years For A Murder I Didn’t Commit

She said that on the night of April 11, 2003, she was nineteen years old and sitting in the passenger seat of her father’s truck in the lot of a Sunoco off Route 9, waiting for him to come out of the store.

She said her father had been drinking since four in the afternoon. She said that was not unusual.

She said a man came out of the store at the same time her father did, and the two of them got into it over nothing, over a parking space, over a word, she never knew exactly what. She said she watched it through the windshield like it was happening on a television in another room.

She said her father went to the toolbox in the truck bed.

She said she looked away.

She said she heard it anyway, and that she had been hearing it for twenty-three years, and that there was no amount of noise in the world loud enough to cover it up.
