I sent Tara a message.
“Nick gave you my maternity wardrobe without asking me. I still need those clothes until after my baby is born. Please don’t unpack or use anything. I need everything returned.”
The typing indicator appeared, disappeared, then came back. After several minutes, she replied: “You need to talk to Nick about this.”
I read it again. “I have talked to him,” I typed, then erased it. I called instead. She did not answer.
Tara knew about the green dress. She had helped me choose it and knew about the lake photos.
I could not understand why she would avoid me if she thought the clothes were a gift she could simply return.
I opened Facebook and went to her Marketplace profile. Several listings showed my clothes: a navy wrap dress, my cardigan, a blouse, then another dress. I kept scrolling until I saw the sage-green gown laid out on Tara’s kitchen table.
