He looked irritated, then seemed to catch himself. “Fine. We’ll go through them.”
I took the receipts from the folder with my maternity leave papers. The total was about $1,380, but some clothes were back in the bags, and some had been sold. We made a list of what was returned and what was still missing. Nick agreed to cover the cost of the items that could not be returned.
The green dress was gone. Tara said it had sold, and there was no way to retrieve it from the buyer. I asked Nick to replace the money it had cost me, not the listing price. He agreed. It was not the same as getting back the dress I had chosen for the photographs, and we both knew it.
Nick started to say that he had thought he was doing something generous. I stopped him.
“You were generous with my things,” I said. “That’s not the same as helping me.”
