“I didn’t think you’d need all of it.”
“I’m still working. I have six weeks left. Those pajamas were for after the delivery.”
He looked down at the table. Elaine did not step in to answer for either of us.
I asked, “Did Tara think I knew the dress was for sale?”
Nick said nothing.
Elaine answered quietly. “She said you had told her Anna knew.”
Tara’s part mattered too. She had seen the message I sent the night before and still told me to speak to Nick. She knew I wanted everything back, and the green dress was already gone. But Nick had supplied the lie she was relying on. Once I had told her directly that I had not agreed, she could have stopped the listings or called me. She had not.
“I should have believed your message,” she said when Elaine called her while we stood there. “I was scared you’d be angry with me.”
