Part 7 — What Hope Gave Back to Us
I stood near the doorway and watched them.
Melissa was sitting with Hope against her chest.
Ryan had lowered himself beside her.
He wasn’t holding the baby yet.
He seemed almost afraid that he hadn’t earned the right.
Then Melissa glanced at him.
Slowly, she shifted Hope.
Ryan hesitated.
Finally, he reached out.
His hands shook as Melissa placed their daughter into his arms.
This time, he didn’t look at her diagnosis.
He looked at her face.
Really looked.
Hope opened her eyes briefly.
Ryan let out a sound that
was somewhere between a laugh and a sob.
“Hi,” he whispered.
His tears landed on the blanket.
“I’m your dad.”
I turned away for a second because my own eyes were burning.
For months, I thought becoming a surrogate meant carrying a baby.
I learned that sometimes we carry much more than that.
We carry other people’s dreams.
Their fears.
Their expectations.
Sometimes even their secrets.
But there comes a moment when love requires us to put down what was never ours to carry.
I could carry Hope for nine months.
I could hold her when Ryan walked away.
I could protect her for three days while everything around her fell apart.
But I could not carry my brother’s shame for him.
And I could not build his marriage on a lie just because telling the truth might hurt.
That part belonged to him.
I walked toward Melissa and kissed
Hope gently on the forehead.
Her skin was warm.
Her tiny hand curled near her cheek.
For the first time since the delivery room, I felt my body relax.
Ryan looked at me.
There were a thousand things between us that still needed repairing.
Anger.
Disappointment.
Love.
History.
But beneath all of it, he was still my brother.
