An accident.
A terrible accident.
A tragedy nobody could have prevented.
That was his story.
But I had never believed it.
Not for one second.
And then the church doors opened.
Jason walked inside.
Black suit.
Black tie.
Perfectly controlled expression.
And beside him was a tall brunette wearing a fitted black dress.
Rachel.
The coworker whose name I had once seen flashing across Lily’s phone late at night.
The woman Lily had asked me about only three months earlier.
The woman Jason had sworn was “just a friend.”
Rachel’s hand was wrapped around Jason’s arm.
Not loosely.
Not awkwardly.
She clung to him as though she had every right to be there.
My mother sucked in a sharp breath.
“Is he serious?”
I could barely speak.
“That’s Rachel.”
My father looked at me.
“The coworker?”
I nodded.
People had begun turning around.
Whispers spread through the church.
