“Jason Reed?”
Jason froze.
“Yes?”
“We need you to come with us.”
The entire church erupted in whispers.
Jason looked around.
“This is a mistake.”
The deputy shook his head.
“You’re being questioned regarding Lily Reed’s death.”
Jason looked at me.
For the first time that day, I saw fear in his eyes.
Real fear.
Not grief.
Not sadness.
Fear.
He pointed toward Mr.
Hayes.
“He set this up.”
The attorney shook his head.
“Lily did.”
Jason looked at Rachel.
She wouldn’t meet his eyes.
Then he looked at my mother.
She turned away.
My father stood between him and us.
Jason finally looked at me.
“Emily.”
I said nothing.
“You know me.”
I stared at him.
“No.”
He swallowed.
“I loved Lily.”
I shook my head.
“You loved what Lily gave you.”
His expression tightened.
“The house.”
“The company.”
“The money.”
“The family name.”
He said nothing.
“And when she stopped being useful to you,” I continued, “you started looking for someone else.”
