“This is ridiculous.”
Mr.
Hayes didn’t react.
“She also suspected that Jason had been telling people she was unstable.”
My mother began crying.
That was exactly what Jason had done.
Two weeks before Lily’s death, he had called my mother and told her Lily was “under enormous stress.”
He said she was becoming paranoid.
He said she was imagining things.
We believed him.
Because Lily herself had told us that everything was fine.
Now I understood why.
Jason had been controlling the story before Lily ever had the chance to tell hers.
Mr.
Hayes turned another page.
“And now, the most important part.”
He looked directly at Jason.
“Lily’s final instructions regarding her estate.”
Jason slowly sat.
The attorney began reading.
“To my husband, Jason Reed, I leave exactly one dollar.”
A few people gasped.
Jason stared at him.
“One dollar?”
Mr.
Hayes nodded.
“To Rachel Morgan, I leave nothing.”
