full story : My daughter stumbled onto my doorstep at three in the morning, still wearing her torn wedding dress, after her husband’s mother beat her for refusing to hand over her condo.

“What does he mean?”

“I don’t know.”

Thomas’s voice returned.

“Ask her what Daniel gave her before the envelope.”

I froze.

Alexander saw it.

“Caroline.”

There had been something else.

Not an object.

A sentence.

One I had forgotten because at the time it made no sense.

I whispered, “He asked me to memorize a number.”

Marcus turned.

“What number?”

“731904.”

The warehouse speakers clicked off.

Marcus immediately pulled out his phone.

“Six digits.”

Sofia’s voice came through the earpiece.

“Could be a code.”

Alexander frowned.

“To what?”

Marcus looked at the brass key.

“Locker 317.”

We escaped the warehouse through a maintenance tunnel that Marcus found behind an old loading bay.

Thomas was gone.

So was Carmen.

Javier came with us.

Alexander hated that.

Sofia hated it more.

When she saw Javier outside, her face became unreadable.

He took one step toward her.

“Sofia.”

“Don’t.”

He stopped.
