It was always money.
Carmen stepped closer.
“Thomas knew Sofia had opened the drive. Javier told him.”
Javier looked ashamed.
Sofia whispered, “Of course he did.”
Javier shouted toward the entrance, “Sofia, I’m sorry!”
She did not answer.
Carmen turned to him.
“You should be.”
Alexander said, “Where is Thomas?”
Carmen looked at the brass key.
“Give me that, and I’ll tell you.”
“No.”
A sound echoed from the upper walkway.
Metal scraping.
Marcus looked up.
“Move!”
The hanging light shattered.
Darkness swallowed the warehouse.
A loud crack split the air.
Not a g/u/nshot.
A steel beam crashing from above.
We scattered.
Someone had cut the support.
Alexander pulled me behind a concrete pillar.
Marcus shouted, “Carmen!”
No answer.
Then Javier screamed.
“Mom!”
Emergency lights flickered on.
Carmen was gone.
Javier stood alone.
A side door swung open.
Alexander grabbed him by the coat.
“Where did she go?”
