full story : My daughter stumbled onto my doorstep at three in the morning, still wearing her torn wedding dress, after her husband’s mother beat her for refusing to hand over her condo.

Carmen looked amused.

“Alexander.”

He stopped ten feet away.

“Elena.”

She smiled.

“There. Finally.”

I stared at the woman who had terrorized my daughter.

She noticed.

“Caroline.”

“You know me.”

“Of course.”

The casual answer disturbed me more than hatred would have.

“You watched my family.”

“For years.”

Alexander’s face hardened.

“Why Sofia?”

Carmen looked almost offended.

“You know why.”

“No. I know why you wanted the condo. I’m asking why you let your son marry her.”

Javier flinched.

Carmen did not.

“Because access is easier through love than force.”

Sofia made a broken sound in my earpiece.

Javier looked toward the entrance as if he could somehow hear her.

“That isn’t true.”

Carmen turned sharply.

“Quiet.”

Javier’s face changed.

I understood then.

He was afraid of her too.

Alexander held up the key.

“Locker 317.”

Carmen’s eyes sharpened.

“Where is the contents?”

“You tell me what happened to Daniel.”
