I sat down.
It was much bigger than I expected.
But there was no explanation.
The next morning, I
planned to confront him.
I never got the chance.
Robert walked into the kitchen and said,
“We’re leaving at eleven.”
“Where are we going?”
“You’ll find out.”
By then, I was almost certain I was finally going to hear the truth.
We drove into town.
When Robert parked outside a bank, I did not even get out of the car.
“Robert, what is going on?”
For the first time, he looked at me very seriously.
“Come inside.” The continuation read in the comments
A woman was already waiting for us.
She smiled and addressed me by name.
“Mrs. Margaret, these documents need your signature.”
I turned toward Robert.
“What documents?”
He placed a blue folder on the table.
“Open it.”
My hands were trembling.
The first page was a bank statement.
There was only one name on the account.
Mine.
I stared at the number, unable to understand what I
was seeing.
Every pension payment I had received over the years was there.
Almost none of it had been spent.
But then I noticed something else.
Beside nearly every deposit was another transfer.
From Robert.
I lifted my head.
“What is this?”

He sat beside me.
“Your money.”
“But you always said…”
“I know what I said.”
He took a deep breath.
“When my father died, my mother had nothing in her own name. After forty years of marriage, she had to ask her children for money just to buy groceries. I promised myself back then that if anything ever happened to me, my wife would never have to ask anyone for a single dollar.”
I could not speak.
Robert continued.
“I paid for the house, the car, and our expenses from my own pension. I never spent your pension
on myself. Every month, I put it into this account. And whenever I could, I added some of my own money too.”
