“When my father died, my mother had nothing in her own name. After forty years of marriage, she had to ask her children for money just to buy groceries. I promised myself back then that if anything ever happened to me, my wife would never have to ask anyone for a single dollar.”
I could not speak.
Robert continued.
“I paid for the house, the car, and our expenses from my own pension. I never spent your pension on myself. Every month, I put it into this account. And whenever I could, I added some of my own money too.”
My eyes were already filling with tears.
But he was not finished.
Robert pulled another document from the folder.
It was the updated ownership paperwork for our house.
In my name.
“Robert…”
He reached for my hand.
“You always heard me say, ‘You don’t need money.’”
A small smile appeared on his face.
