Five days before my wedding, my brother left me with a serious shoulder injury. When I reached for help, Dad grabbed my phone. “Don’t call the police! Your brother has a future!” I stayed silent, but I remembered everything.

His expression hardened.

“So now you think you’re better than me?”

“That isn’t what I said.”
“You’ve got money, Claire. Twenty thousand means nothing to you.”

“It means something when I’m constantly being asked to give it away.”

Evan raised his voice.

“You’ve changed. Ever since you started making serious money, you act like the rest of us are beneath you.”

I tried to end the conversation.

“I’m not discussing this anymore.”

But Evan refused to accept my answer.

The disagreement escalated.

In the confusion that followed, he acted aggressively toward me, and I fell onto the garage floor.

Pain spread through my shoulder.

For several seconds, I couldn’t move comfortably.

I knew immediately that something was seriously wrong.

Evan stood nearby, breathing heavily.

“You always have to make everything difficult,” he muttered.

I looked at him in disbelief.

Then I reached for my phone.
