Five days before my wedding, my brother left me with a serious shoulder injury. When I reached for help, Dad grabbed my phone. “Don’t call the police! Your brother has a future!” I stayed silent, but I remembered everything.

He looked toward me in disbelief.

“What am I supposed to do?”

I remembered his words from the garage.

Then I answered quietly.

“You’ve always said Evan has a promising future. Perhaps it’s time you allowed him to take responsibility for his own.”

Dad lowered his gaze.

For once, he had nothing to say.

I stepped away.

Daniel was waiting nearby.

He took my hand gently.

“Are you all right?”

I looked into his eyes.

“I am now.”

He smiled.

“Ready?”

I nodded.

“More than ever.”

After the disruption was resolved and everyone had settled, our wedding continued.

It wasn’t the peaceful ceremony we’d originally imagined.

But when Daniel and I exchanged our vows, I felt more certain of my future than I ever had.

I was marrying someone who respected me.

Someone who cared about my well-being.

Someone who didn’t confuse love with financial obligation.
And that mattered more than having a picture-perfect celebration.
