Five days before my wedding, my brother left me with a serious shoulder injury. When I reached for help, Dad grabbed my phone. “Don’t call the police! Your brother has a future!” I stayed silent, but I remembered everything.

“You recorded me?”

“The garage security system recorded what happened,” I replied.

His face reddened.

“You’re doing this because I asked you for money?”

I shook my head.

“No, Evan. I’m doing this because you crossed a serious boundary, and I’m no longer willing to protect you from the truth.”

The detective continued speaking with him while the guests watched in stunned silence.

There was no shouting from me.

No dramatic confrontation.

I let the professionals handle the matter.

Then Halcyon’s chief financial officer addressed the separate issue.

“Mr. Mercer, your company’s contracts with Halcyon are being reviewed. The preliminary audit has identified substantial discrepancies in submitted invoices.”

Evan looked bewildered.

“Halcyon?”

“Yes.”

He shook his head.

“What does that have to do with Claire?”

I met his eyes.

“I’m the controlling owner of Halcyon Properties.”

For several seconds, he simply stared.

Then he laughed nervously.
