Every evening, my sister took a shower, then walked into grandpa’s bedroom with her hair still wet and locked the door. One night, I followed Her—and what I heard inside made me reach for my phone immediately…

because of me.”

But Emily still looked deeply worried.

“I can’t keep doing this alone,” she said. “The infection has become worse. He needs to go to the hospital tonight.”

Grandpa tried to object, but I was already calling an ambulance. At the hospital, the doctor told us that if we had waited just

a few more days, the infection might have spread into Grandpa’s bloodstream. He was

admitted for emergency treatment.

Emily and I were sitting in the hallway when Mom came rushing through the doors. At first, she was furious that something

so serious had been hidden from us. Then she wrapped her arms around Emily and held her tightly.

“You tried to save him,” she said through her tears. “But you should never have had to carry something like this alone.”

Grandpa remained in the hospital for two weeks. When Emily’s nursing instructor learned about the cost of his treatment,

she organized a fundraiser.

For years, Grandpa had repaired his neighbors’ cars for free, helped struggling single mothers, and cleared snow from elderly

residents’ yards during winter.

When the community found out what had happened, they raised the entire amount needed for his treatment in only three

days.

The day Grandpa returned home, we sat together on the same couch and took another picture. This

time, he no longer

looked stern. He had one arm around Emily and was trying to hide his tears.

“I thought I was protecting my family,” he said. “But my silence nearly caused all of you even more pain.”

I looked at my sister and felt ashamed of the terrible thoughts that had crossed my mind.

Everything that had seemed disturbing and frightening to me had actually been my sister’s selfless attempt to save our grandfather’s life.

A few months later, Emily graduated from nursing school.

Before accepting her diploma, she looked toward Grandpa, who was sitting in the front row.

He rose to his feet and applauded louder than anyone else in the room.

That day, he wrapped his arms around Emily and told her:

“You aren’t only my granddaughter. You’re the reason I’m still here today.”
