Emily & Nathaniel

I told him I wasn’t asking him to take me back.

I hoped he would want to know his children.

I sent it certified mail to the family firm’s executive office, where he received personal correspondence.

A week later, the tracking record showed a signature.

No reply came.

I called twice and left messages with his assistant.

The first time she sounded uncomfortable. The second time she said Nathaniel was traveling and didn’t wish to discuss our private affairs at the office.

I made a final attempt through my divorce attorney.

Her letter received a formal response from Whitcomb family counsel: Nathaniel denied knowledge of any pregnancy, disputed the timing, and requested that I stop contacting his workplace.

I kept every document in a blue folder because I had learned the hard way that the truth sometimes needed a place to live outside my memory.

At my next appointment, Dr.Price played the heartbeats again.
