“If the ceremony gets delayed long enough, Ethan will come looking for me,” Vanessa said. “I’ll tell him Olivia has been screaming at everyone and that she doesn’t want to marry him anymore. He already thinks she’s under too much pressure.”
“And if he doesn’t believe you?”
“He will when I show him the messages.”
“What messages?”
“The ones I made sure he saw.”
I stopped breathing.
Vanessa continued, her voice thick with smug satisfaction.
“I’ve been telling him she’s been having doubts. That she feels trapped by the wedding. I never said anything that couldn’t be interpreted two different ways. If he questions me, I’ll tell him I was protecting him.”
A pause followed.
Then Kendra asked the question that made my stomach twist.
“What about the messages between you and Ethan?”
Vanessa laughed softly.
“Those are going to make tomorrow very interesting.”
I recorded everything.
When their conversation finally shifted to gossip about another guest, I returned to my bed and listened to the recording twice. Every word was clear.
